After a person has their fly rod, the flies, wading boots, a fishing vest to hold the flies, and all of the other items needed including a license they are ready to get out into the water. Finding the right place to fish is important. Look for submerged tress of boulders. Fish like to hide in these areas and they frequent them for feeding. Avoid the downstream part of a river or other body of water. It is difficult to fish near rapids and fish try to avoid swimming in these areas. When entering the water try to be as quiet as possible so the fish are not scared away.
The two stroke method if the basic casting method. Before trying to cast make sure there is plenty of room on all sides. Lead out around the length of three rods of fishing line. This may seem like a lot of line but it is going to be needed. Hold the rod in the hand that is dominant. Check the line to make sure there are no tangles of knots in it. Extend the arm and whip the top of the rod out. Do not whip it back far but stop when it is slighting behind. The line should be extended right away. As soon as the line has straightened out flick the rod in a forward motion. This will make the flies move on the top of the water and the movement will attract the fish.
It is important that fish see that the fly is in motion. The fly needs to look like a real bug on top of the water. This will get the attention of the fish. Allow the fly to drift or gently twitch the rod so that is more slightly. The rod should be move to the left or the right to make the fly move slightly. To get even more movement angle the rod so that the line is drag free. If the fish is already near the surface of the water cast the fly so it is as close to the head of the fish as possible.
A fly fisher will know they have a bite when the line is taut. It is important to properly hook the fish. Keep the tip of the rod in the water. Allow the line to go taut. Do not try to hook the fish when there is slack in the line. Allow the hook to enter the mouth of the fish. To secure the hook hold the rod in one hand and pull down on the rod quickly with the other hand. Do not move the rod upward. This will make reeling the fish in more complicated. Keep the rod close to the water and point it in the direction of the line. This will help prevent the fish from escaping. The fish is going to fight but that is to be expected.
The fish will try to fight back and swim away. It is important to keep the rod in the water. It if is lifted up this can create pressure and the rod may break. Reel the fish in so that it is able to reach shallow water. As the fish approaches get the net ready. Once the fish has moved pack the rim of this net flick it up so that fish is then caught in the net. At the same time lift this net out of the water so the fish does not have a chance to get away. Some people like to catch fish for the sport and release them. Others want to take the fish home and eat them. After catching the fish decide what to do right away.
Fly fishing is going to take some time and patience. A person may not catch a fish the first time they are out on the water. They need to spend some time learning how to cast the line properly. Fly fishing will allow a person to get right in the water with the fish. This form of fishing takes skill. If a person can master it they can be a true fisherman or woman.
